Mekele to Dodom - Volcano Base
Drive from Mekele through the dramatic landscapes of the Afar region to Dodom village. Experience the dramatic temperature increase as you descend into the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on Earth. Pass through traditional Afar villages and see camel caravans transporting salt. Arrive at Dodom and begin the 3-hour trek to Erta Ale volcano base camp as sunset approaches, avoiding the extreme daytime heat. The night trek is illuminated by headlamps as you cross lava fields. Set up camp near the volcano crater rim, feeling the earth's heat through the ground. Briefing on volcano safety before attempting to view the lava lake.
